WEDNESDAY September 16th, 8pm @SWIGG - TOM BARFORD QUINTET

Tom Barford (Sax)   Winner of the 2017 Kenny Wheeler Prize, released his debut album Bloomer as a result on Edition Records. Since then he has released multiple albums as a leader with the band AuB with Edition and Whirlwind Records and I have just realised an exciting live album entitled Live at the Parakeet. The album received a 4* review in Jazzwise

The Tom Barford Quintet bring a bold, modern approach to jazz, mixing up-tempo grooves, rich harmonies, and spirited improvisation. Known for their tight interplay and adventurous compositions, the group creates music that feels fresh, unpredictable and full of energy. As Jazzwise says, “You rarely get mirth and musicality so enmeshed, the band are evidently having the best of times as they move between tight ensemble shapes and splendidly rapturous solo spaces”.

The music is quite eclectic- virtuosic playing over fast tempos, Wayne Shorter and Vince Mendoza inspired compositions and even some tasty arrangements of some Joe Henderson classics like Inner Urge!
